Where did it all start?
The original idea to create a natural deodorant started in late 2016. Courtney, our founder, read a number of articles about the potential harmful effects of aluminium salts in deodorant and decided to make the switch to something more natural.
“It felt like one step forward and two steps back”
Just under a year later, he realised that there was a bigger issue that needed to be tackled; single-use plastic. There were many natural deodorant brands on the market. Some worked better than others, but almost all of them were still sold in single-use plastic containers. It felt like one step forward and two steps back.
He decided to try and ‘scratch his own itch’ and simply make his own deodorant. That would solve both the problem of unnecessary chemicals his deodorant, and the single-use plastic problem. The first formulations for the deodorant were created after a few months of research and experimentation. It was then tested, re-tested and then tested again.
Later that year the first sample batches went into the public domain. Our friends and family give it the last sign-off that was needed to go into full production. Since then, PITT BALM has sold consistently in the UK and throughout Europe.
The UK’s first refillable natural deodorant
As we’ve grown as a company, we now recognise that there is more that can be done to help solve the problem of single use containers. We realised that PITT BALM doesn’t need to be housed in a new container – just a clean one. In Summer 2019 we launched our refill program. We are working with a number of zero waste stores across the country to provide the UK’s first truly zero-waste deodorant.
You can now go into your local refill or zero-waste store and fill up any container with our deodorant. With more stores coming on board every day we’re hoping to take the product worldwide so if your local store doesn’t stock our refillable deodorant, contact us to let us know and we’ll do the rest.
We are also working hard to bring a refill solution to our online customers. This program is in beta trials at the moment. We hope to launch our online refills in the first half of 2020.
